BLOOMSBURG AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT

English as a Second Language Program

Program Description:

The Language Instructional Educational Program used in Bloomsburg Area School District is classified as Mixed Classes with English Only Support. The language focus of this program as defined by Pennsylvania Department of Education is, "English language skills and content are the focus of instruction. The student’s native language is not used in either instruction or support. Support could be provided either inside or outside of the regular classroom." The LIEP was classified by considering the goals of the program and determining the composition of a majority of a student’s academic classes.

Bloomsburg Area School District's ESL program offers instruction by a certified ESL teacher to students whose first language is not English and have limited English proficiency. Students learn to understand, speak, read, and write English. They are also helped to adjust to a new culture system. This instruction is in a supportive and non-threatening environment. The goal is to help ELs make necessary academic and social adjustments.

Program Goals:

2.To improve students English language proficiency.

3.To enable students to function academically in English at their appropriate grade level.

4.To ensure that access to other educational programs and services is not precluded by enrollment in the LIEP Program.
